Rione Ferraia

The Ferraia district is one of the four historic districts of Pescia
Our coat of arms, a golden lily on a red background, stands proud in the heart of the historic centre, in the north-western district of the city: the oldest, the one where the political and commercial life of Pescia took place for centuries, between the Palazzo del Vicario, the Palazzo del Podestà and the famous Mercato Longo, today Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini.
Our origins
It all began on 23 September 1980, when a group of friends gathered in the parish hall with a simple but ambitious idea: to bring to light the ancient traditions of Pescia and challenge, as they once did, "those across the river". Twenty of them signed the birth of the Rione Ferraia Committee: the first district of the city to be officially established, then dragging the other three to do the same during 1981.
The haphazardly arranged uniforms have become haute couture costumes. The small group of brave people transformed into a historic procession of over one hundred participants. And that registered office shared with the city band is today a welcoming place that preserves a very rich local heritage.
What we do
The heart of our activities is the Palio di Pescia, which takes place every first Sunday of September in Piazza Mazzini: an archery competition in which the four districts compete after a historical procession that passes through the entire historic city centre.
La Ferraia is the most awarded district in the history of the Palio, with 17 victories to its credit.
But the Ferraia is much more than a competition. We are musicians, flag-wavers, dancers, archers, ladies and nobles: groups that perform all year round in the most beautiful Tuscan streets, in events throughout Italy and abroad, bringing with them the history and traditions of Pescia.
We are the Supper of San Jacopo, the medieval Propitiatory Supper, the week of the Palio, the banquets of ancient crafts during the May Festival. We are the collaborations with the parish, we rehearse in the evening all together, we are the neighborhood Ferraioli.
We are, above all, a community that never stops.
