Medicina Situated 537 metres above sea level, it is surrounded by a forest of centuries-old chestnut trees and, thanks to its geographical position, dominates two valleys. Over the centuries, it has been the scene of fierce battles between the people of Lucca and the Florentines, who tried hard to annex it as their possession. It is the town where Francesco Ferrucci stayed the day before the battle of Gavinana (1530).
Medicina was annexed to the Municipality of Pescia in 1881, along with 120 hectares of state-owned land belonging to Villa Basilica. The parishes, however, remain under the Diocesi of Lucca.
Must-sees: the ruins of ancient fortresses and the walls of an ancient parish church dedicated to Saints Sixtus and Martin. The church retains only a few remnants of its original structure, having been rebuilt in the early 1800s. Inside, noteworthy features include the baptismal font dating back to the mid-16th century and the two 15th-century wooden statues, both depicting the Madonna and Child.
